The World Trade Organization ensures that trade flows freely amongst nations, settles potential disputes, helps developing countries, and stays predictable. If the US were to abandon the organization it would be out of selfishness and likely lead to disaster. The only plausible reason to leave the WTO would be the desire to shift from a rule-based system into a power-based system. This could potentially impede China’s economic growth; however, for this to happen, the US would have to rely on various nations to follow their lead in leaving the organization and hence create a new approach to trade. The US could potentially create uninhibited trade policies which could boost their trading prospects; however, this is not a risk that should be taken, especially in the globalized world.

Without the WTO the U.S. is in danger of countries discriminating against their goods and services without any limits. U.S. producers would be denied lower barriers abroad, export markets would plummet, and China or other European countries could take control of the economy. The U.S. should stay in the WTO because it allows them to have their own markets open which benefits consumers and imports. Additionally, the WTO agreements open markets around the world which helps U.S. exports. Ultimately, the WTO prevents countries from raising barriers against U.S. exports because it has been agreed to be lowered, and if countries were to violate the agreement, they would be vulnerable to the WTO dispute system.

In my opinion, the economy and trade agreements today must limit the power of governments to interfere in the commerce of citizens. The WTO offers this limitation to most countries, allowing each to protect and advance their economic interests. Ultimately, It is not worth leaving the WTO because its implications will decrease the prestige and power of the U.S. Leaving a well-functioning judiciary system like the WTO does not guarantee a promising future or a push back against China.

I really enjoy the way you incorporate an abundance of perspectives on your argument. You weigh the risks of each hypothetical situation while also analyzing the benefits. This was extremely thought-provoking and allowed me, as the reader, to form my own opinions on the topic. Additionally, your integration of topics like China and rule-based versus power-based systems is compelling. Overall, your blog post is well-written and full of great content.
