Remi Blog post 1

Remi Adefioye POLS 170 Blog 1 From class and the readings, it is clear that there are many layers to power in international politics and they can be used in various ways. The two forms that stand out to me are military and soft power.   Military and weapon strength is one of the most common ways of thinking about power in general. For example, the current taboo of nuclear weapons in our society today is a reflection of the constant struggle for military power across the world. As discussed in class, Mearsheimer strongly supports having a strong military because he believes military power is all that a nation needs to have control. Morgenthau on the other hand thinks that power can be anything as long as it maintains control over its opposition. Particularly in the US, many argue that the large funding to the military should be used in other areas of society, while others believe that the US must remain a military superpower. Clearly, this is a polarized debate amongst c...

Ajao Blog Post #1

Christine Ajao Professor Shirk  Internation Politics  03 February 2022     The study of international relations involves the relationships between different countries in politics, trade, economics, and other affairs. International relations has a dark history of slavery and colonization to build up certain countries, especially the Western ones.   Productive power is the ability to create the identities of their actors and their place in the world. This term is rooted in words like “civilized”, “rouge”, “European”, “Western”, etc. Productive power highlights the everyday relations of people. W.E. Dubois’s writing called “Of the Culture of White Folk”, discusses how Europe is seen as a great power when they have profited off colonizing other countries, especially countries with people of color. Dubois believes that European countries are greedy and says how shocked he is that they are now fighting again while the other colonized countries are...

Cohen Blog 1

Daniel Cohen Prof. Shirk International Relations 3 February, 2022 For my first blog I wanted to discuss something that caught my attention the first time we looked at it in class: Political Realism. I connected the theories and ideas of this point of view almost immediately to Niccolo Machiavelli, an Italian renaissance philosopher known for his unconventional and some would say immoral political style.  I think Machiavelli, more than any other political philosopher I’ve studied, embodies the standards and principles laid out in political realism. As a man who was born during a time when the ethical standards of state and of warfare were paramount to international relations, Machiavelli was presented with a field of study wherein his ideas were unlikely to immediately garner widespread acceptance or support.  He was among the first to develop a political theory that drew a line of separation between politics and ethics, a theory that claimed morality was defined in a wa...

Cote Blog 1

The first current event situation that stands out to me the most are the development between NATO, the Republic of Ukraine, and the Russian Federation. The actions of Vladimir Putain and the Russian government are linked with the idea that international politics is about actors following their material interests. Ukraine was once part of the Soviet Union and gained its independence in 1991, along with multiple other states as the Iron Curtain fell. Russia lost a large amount of world power and prestige with the massive territorial losses, and have ever since been slowly trying to incorporate its lost territories, now independent states, under its control again. As a way of intimidating Ukraine as it moves through the political process of joining NATO, Russia has mobilized over one hundred thousand troops on its Ukrainian border. It is very important to note that Russia forcefully annexed the Ukrainian territory, The Crimea, in 2014 as a way of boosting Russian naval ...

Billera Blog 1

Simone Billera February 3rd, 2022 Blog Post #1 The concept of power dynamics is a recurring theme within my courses here at Bucknell. Such a finding is unsurprising, simply because power dynamics are rooted in the depths of human nature, and therefore, inevitably intertwined in society. Within The Melian Dialogue by Thucydides, the topic of hierarchy in regards to power is discussed repeatedly, the most salient line being, “The strong do what they have the power to do, and the weak accept what they have to accept” (2). This line is especially interesting because it illustrates the vivid image that a hierarchy is a system of stagnance. Furthermore, it implies that the power relationship between those at the top and those at the bottom are perpetually fixed. When making such observations, I realized that similar concepts were discussed in another piece of class material. Enloe also examines these hierarchical positions of power, mentioning how people have a tendency to view them as na...
